Few artists can bring together genres and culture the way that Senit can.
On her new singles "One Stop Shop" and "AOK", the Italy-based Eritrean songstress fuses together pop and dance seamlessly for a sound that's both international and infectious. She's got the style and savvy to be the best kind of worldwide musical voice.
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Senit talks her music and so much more...
Is it important for you to incorporate different sounds and styles into what you do?
I try to be international and global. I'd love for it to work all around the world, even on the moon if I can. I'm very open. I like every style of music, and I'm very eclectic. I like to listen to as much as I can and be around a lot of musicians. I try to take in as much information as I can. If I like something, I try to infuse it into the music. It's somewhere between pop, rock, electro, and dance. It's nice to experiment. Everything's so fast. It's nice to be involved in every kind of music and mix it.
What's the story behind "One Stop Shop"?
I wrote the song with two producers. One was from London, and one was from Boston. I always told them I'm not a femme fatale. We wanted to find a nice and catchy song. It was very fun because it's an English song with this silly jingle and an Italian word. After I'm listening to it over and over again, it was so catchy. It's great to dance to as well!
How did "AOK" come together?
When you go to the beach, you want to listen to something catchy with your friends. We were thinking about that. I was actually listening to this song, and I immediately thought of a thousand people dancing and really enjoying it. We needed a song that could fit the summer. This is it.
What artists shaped you?
I always liked to listen to old music like Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin. Marvin Gaye, The Jackson Five, and Michael Jackson. They're all amazing musicians. Today's music is very modern, but it's got that old sound. I like to mix things up though. I'll go from Aretha Franklin one day to P!nk the next day. I go from Stevie Wonder to Sting to Bruno Mars. I feel like that old style is back. You'll hear the same beats in Bruno Mars and Alicia Keys that you did back in the day.
What influences you outside of music?
I'm a very dynamic person. I like to play a lot of sports and watch a lot of movies. I'm addicted to TV series from Glee! to Grey's Anatomy to Mad Men to Law and Order. I like to be with my family. I love animals because I have two cats and one dog. I love to travel. It's not only about music. It's about art general. I like museums and photography. I'm like a sponge. I like going to the U.S. because you can learn something every second. There's always something happening. That's amazing, and I feel like it's an unbelievable gift for me to experience.
What do you love about Italy?
Every time I come back, I'm super happy to be in Italy. First of all, the food here is unbelievable! It's fantastic. The people are very friendly and open-minded. It's beautiful. In Bologna, we have the oldest university in Europe. Everything is so close. It's a beautiful country! You've got to see everything.
