SPICA are Korea's hottest export right now. The all-female five-piece delivers its sizzling and sexy US debut with the single "I Did It". It's immediately infectious and irresistible—just like the girls are. They're bound to make a big splash stateside and all around the world, but it starts now with "I Did It", which is one of the year's catchiest international singles.
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, SPICA talk "I Did It" and so much more.
Do you enjoy coming over to America?
We think it's every musician's dream to come the United States. It's the birthplace of so many genres of modern music. Now we have our own US single called "I Did It"!
What was your favorite part of visiting the United States?
We'd say the diverse options of food, the dry and warm weather of LA, the wild characters of Venice Beach, and shopping in Santa Monica. Playing our music and seeing American music fans reactions was the definitely the highlight!
What's the story behind "I Did It"? What does the song mean to you and where was it coming from?
"I Did It" was created specifically for the American market. It has elements of what we and the producers Daniel Merlot, Cory Enemy, and Oliver Goldstein thought were a current American radio sound. It's an upbeat, dance pop song that has elements of funk, pop, and hip-hop to evoke a sense of 90's pop nostalgia. The lyrical content of the song is based on girl empowerment and independence.
How did the video concept come about?
We wanted to make something simple that reflected the song's fashion sense and dance choreography. We didn't want to make something gimmicky that was going to take away from the introduction of our characters to a new audience.
Where do you all connect musically?
Our simple desire and love of singing...It's our escape from the pressures of life.
What artists shaped you? Who do you listen to now that you also listened to as kids?
Some of them are Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Pussy Cat Dolls, P!nk, and Alicia Keys.
What else inspires you outside of music?
Fashion, art, movies, and Traveling...Also, sometimes, the bad things in life can bring out the most creative moments.
For someone who has never been to Korea, what should you definitely check out when visiting?
Wow, the Han River at night, shopping in Gangnam, Seoul's nightlife, walking around Hongdae, and, of the course, the spicy food!
What's next for you?
We're releasing our next single for the Korean market and promoting that. Then, we're continuing to record songs for more American releases!
