R&B crooner from the Lone Star state gives us a lesson in "Can't Trust Thots," the music that influenced him, and hints at next single.
Wash is turning R&B upside down this year. His debut single for Interscope Records, "Can't Trust Thots" featuring French Montana, is a smooth, slick and sizzling banger. It showcases the Texas native's dynamic vocal range as well as his ability to deliver a downright massive hook, falsetto and all. It's easily one of the catchiest jams you'll hear all year. So, we spoke to Wash about the crazy coincidence behind "Can't Trust Thots," why he makes music, his last day job, and so much more in this exclusive interview.
How did "Can't Trust Thots" come together?
It was about a situation that I was going through back home, and it was something that came together after sharing the same kinds of stories with my boys. My cousin and I got the same email message from the same girl. It was that kind of message that you know guys sometimes get. Around the same time, my producer hit me up and said, "I have this song I want you to record." Funny enough, the girl that sent me the message always said that I have to write a song about her, so I did [Laughs].
Do songs usually come together like this?
Everything happens organically as me and my producer are in the studio, messing around, trying things out and working with different terminology. I usually freestyle and try incorporating elements of my life on the track.
When did French Montana jump on the track?
He actually recorded it a week before it was supposed to be released. He heard it while at the Interscope building and asked one of the A&R reps who it was because he wanted to get on the track ASAP. Of course, I was cool with it, and he came in and killed his verse. He's a dope artist and things started to move from there.
The "Private Show" remix between you and Sevyn Streeter really stands out.
Yeah, she is phenomenally talented and, of course, a beautiful young artist. It's another one that my producer started working on. I put my parts down and it just worked real well. It came naturally.
