The Winnipeg based quintet has become a favorite of the Canadian blogosphere, with their blending of expansive pop rock and the soulful vocals of singer Marti Sarbit. The band can trace its origins back to a bar called the Cavern in Winnipeg where Sarbit was fronting a Motown cover band, and the band's other primary songwriter Rusty Maytas was mixing sound for the evening. Maytas was immediately captured by Sarbit's vocals, and was compelled to commit her voice to tape. The result was the instantly compelling EP opener "Say You," a track that perfectly encapsulates the quality in Sarbit's voice that Maytas heard in the Cavern.
The Cities were also invited to join the Pixies on the entire run of their North American tour last year.
In a short period of time, Rusty and Marti has evolved from strangers, to a pair of musical allies tinkering in the studio to part of a permanent five-piece band with an international following. As they prepare to release Temporary Resident in the US and embark on a subsequent tour, the band is sure to break through to a more mainstream audience stateside.
