Kicking cancer's ass certainly can help a person learn to slow down and appreciate the little things in life. That's what Jack's Mannequin frontman Andrew McMahon did!
McMahon was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005 and underwent chemotherapy to fight the blood disease.
He's recovered now and moving forward with his music. McMahon told The Daily News that "Fighting cancer really helped me to take stock of what I have. There are certainly elements of my life that have changed since I found out I had cancer. The biggest is the way I perceive things. I'm still in a rock 'n' roll band. That's a fact. But I no longer burn the candles at both ends.
He also said, "There are certainly moments when I look back on my life pre-cancer and think, 'That was pretty good, too bad all this real-life stuff had to happen.' But the truth is that before I got sick, there were many things that I was doing that were a direct reflection of not really being all that healthy or in a very good place."
McMahon also founded the cancer research organization Dear Jack Foundation to help those facing the same illness he did. He said, "I have this natural inclination to do something to make it better for the next person who experiences similar circumstances. My message is to stay positive, keep your chin down, push forward and you will make it through with dignity. It is certainly worth the fight. That's for sure."
