James Blake's Surprise Release, Anohni, White Lung Are All Top Albums of the Week - April 30 - May 6

Another week, another surprise release by a music giant. It's clear that surprise releasing an album is the 'hip' thing to do these days, and sometimes it's best to just let go the moment you're ready. However, some artists still prefer to unveil a record the old fashioned way. Cyndi Lauper debuted Detour her first album in six years. Goo Goo Dolls is now a twosome and released their 11th studio album Boxes. Country music star Keith Urban unveiled his ninth album Ripcord. So it's clear that some artists still like to release records on a scheduled date.
Young and experimental artists don't seem to mind normal releases either. You might know Tourist, aka William Phillips, from co-writing Sam Smith's GRAMMY Award-winning “Stay With Me,” but his debut record U is nothing like Smith. Death Grips released their fifth studio album, Bottomless Pit. And that was only the beginning for a week filled with both the expected and unexpected.
Here are our favorite albums of the week:
Anohni - HOPELESSNESS - Secret Canadian, Rough Trade
Anohni's solo debut tackles the difficulties of the modern world. Hopelessness is an album full of protest and juxtaposes electronic dance music with harsh reality. The collision of the two create something primal and palpable.
Beverly - The Blue Swell - Kanine Records
Beverly has gone through some changes since their debut and Frankie Rose left the band. The breakup clearly had an affect on Drew Clinton, it has put some depth behind the swirling guitar pop, making for a surprisingly affecting piece even though it feels light.
James Blake - The Colour in Anything - Polydor, Republic Records
Not many people knew James Blake was releasing The Colour in Anything today, but we couldn't be more happy that it's here. Lush and complex, the record follows Blake further down the rabbit hole. It's simply stunning.
Kaytranada - 99.9% - XL Recordings
On his seventh studio release, Kaytranada works with everyone from Vic Mensa to AlunaGeorge to Anderson .Paak to Craig David. Despite the diverse talent, the album is cohesive. The songs are energetic and perfect for the upcoming summer.
White Lung - Paradise - Domino Recording Co.
The highly anticipated fourth album from White Lung does not disappoint. Paradise is outspoken and challenging, touching on the inner concepts of feminism.
