Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has spoken to Billboard.com about the band's invitation to have him play at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction this Saturday in Cleveland. Drummer Lars Ulrich called Newsted—who quit in 2001 to play in Voivod—last Thursday, saying, "We want you to rock with us. [Current bassist Robert Trujillo] is not gonna play at all. We want you to play."

Newsted then said, "How does [Robert] feel about that? I don't want to create any kind of negative anything. I want this all to be proper." To which Ulrich responded, "No, he's with it, man. He wants to be there as a fan, too, and wants to see the Black album band. It's all good. Everybody's agreed to it. Let's rock!"

Newsted says he is bringing the exact amplifier rig he used in Metallica, along with the Sadowski five-string bass that "has played more songs for Metallica than any other bass instrument in the world.

"I'm freakin' over the moon, man," Newsted added. "It's another...well, the biggest feather in the cap so far, I guess. The Grammys are feathers all around the cap, but this one will be a little bigger, I have a feeling."
