Jay-Z and Kanye West Facing Possible Lawsuit For "Watch the Throne"

R&B/Soul singer Syl Johnson is considering a lawsuit against Jay-Z and Kanye West over an uncleared sample of his 1967 song "Different Strokes," which is used on the Watch the Throne track "The Joy."
According to a blog posting, Johnson is weighing his options: "Two decades and several lawsuits later, Syl Johnson is a veteran of copyright infringement cases, and has done very well for himself clearing samples from his fertile catalog (we're glad to say we've helped him with a few) for use in numerous tracks. He's been amply paid, as he is quick to boast in his concerts, by acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Kid Rock and Michael Jackson."
The post indicates that the label Numero Uno Group reached out to Def Jam about clearing the sample after Johnson was made aware of the song. Negotiations stalled since the song was not actually being sold at that time. However, "The Joy" appeared as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Watch the Throne.
Team Syl Johnson or Team Watch the Throne?
