JAY-Z, Katy Perry, & Arcade Fire Show Signs Of Life In Top Music Videos Of The Week - July 7
Thu, 06 Jul 2017 16:45:51
This Fourth of July week has really been good to music fans and people in general. Many of enjoyed the pleasures of barbecuing with friends and family and watched fireworks light up the night sky. Fans weren't the only ones creating a bang this week, however. Musicians from every genre were dropping music videos full of colors and/or images that simply blew us away.
Katy Perry teamed up with a Brazilian dance troupe to create one of the most enticing and colorful lyric videos we've seen. Run the Jewels meanwhile turned themselves into piles of clay and considered power dynamics.
Arcade Fire hit the streets and waters of Miami looking for "Signs of Life" in their new video. And did you hear JAY-Z came out with a new album? We thought so, but he also dropped what might be the most stunning video of the year — don't miss that below. So without further ado, here are our favorite music videos of the week:
Katy Perry — "Swish Swish"
Katy Perry is still riding high from the release of her newest number one album, Witness. And in celebration of the achievement Perry released a lyric video for "Swish Swish", the assumed Taylor Swift diss track, that features Brazilian dance troupe Fit Dance. The clip features a guest appearance from Brazilian singer Gretchen as well, who released a string of hits in the '80s. And if you thought this would be the last ‘Swish Swish' video from the likes of Perry, guess again. She has now launched a competition to find a dancer for another video for the track.
Arcade Fire — "Signs of Life"
Arcade Fire's forthcoming album Everything Now is just three long weeks aways. Thankfully they've already shared three songs to whet our appetite. The newest, "Signs of Life", came with a beautiful new video to boot. The clip resembles a ‘90s TV drama mixed with some sharp, quick cuts, and finds two protagonists roaming Miami by car, foot, and boat. Oh did we mention the album is produced by Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter? Let's just say we're excited.
JAY-Z — "The Story of O.J."
JAY-Z just dropped one of the most honest and poignant albums of the year so far, and that isn't just our opinion, even Kendrick Lamar said "444. WOW. MASTER TEACHER". It was truly a triumph for the self-made billionaire. With the release of the record came the video for "The Story of O.J.", which is finally available for non TIDAL subscribers. The clip isn't just good, it's culturally significant. For an artist this big to be releasing a video like this, it's just staggering. We won't ruin it by saying anymore, just watch.
Neil Young + Promise of the Real — "Children of Destiny"
Neil Young and Promise of the Real last teamed up on their 2015 collaborative album The Monsanto Years, so few were expecting the release of their new track "Children of Destiny". But now that it's here, we are happy it is. Young's video for "Children of Destiny" combines footage of patriotic imagery like children waving American flags and Fourth of July cookouts with recent large-scale protests alongside.
Run the Jewels — "Don't Get Captured"
Run the Jewels released their outstanding third record, Run the Jewels 3, last December, and ever since there has been a steady stream of superb music videos. That trend continued this week with the dropped the clip for "Don't Get Captured". It features the two rappers reborn as claymation figures, and it's a meditation on power and politics. This is the second stunning video from the duo in a row, who just appeared last week on this list with Danger Mouse and Big Boi for "Chase Me" from the Baby Driver soundtrack.
