In honor of our premiere of the "Let's Get Naughty" music video, ARTISTdirect.com spoke to Jessie and The Toy Boys about the song. It's quite the anthem, and it redefines the term "banger"…Just take one listen and you'll know why!
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief and Dolor author Rick Florino, Jessie and The Toy Boys reveals the story behind the song and so much more.
What's the story behind "Let's Get Naughty?" When did you write it? How did it come together? What does it mean to you?
I wrote "Let's Get Naughty" over a year ago and just kind of forgot about it for a while.... Then I was going through all my material to decide what songs I was going to play for The Femme Fatale Tour, and I came across it in my demos folder on my computer. I played it for my choreographer Bobby Newberry, and he and the dancers freaked out! It was instantly their favorite song of mine because the beat is so hard and the lyrics are so swag. So that was that, there really was no discussion, it simply had to be in my set. Then we started having fun with the whips and choreography.
Where does it fit within the framework of the album?
"Let's Get Naughty" is for all of my fierce, confidant, independent, fannequins who own their individuality. It's one of the more playful songs on the album and one of the most fun songs I have ever written. It was really funny when I was recording it because my producer said "Did you just say, 'Flip me over like a pancake?' " and I was like, "Yup... I sure did!" [Laughs]
Did it change after playing it live on tour?
Playing "Let's Get Naughty" live all summer is what really brought the song to life for me. Nicki and Britney's dancers would run up to me back stage and chant "All my hoes touch your toes!" I knew my friends and dancers loved the song, but I didn't anticipate it would be such a crowd favorite. Every single night in every single city I would get flooded with tweets and Facebook messages from people who were at the concert begging me to release a studio version for them. This video is really for my fannequins. I want them to know I listened to them.
What's your favorite part of the video?
My favorite part is the street art element threaded throughout the video. It was important for me to collaborate with some real legit street artists and not some random actors posing as street artists. I'm friends with Thank You X and the boys in Cyrcle. So they helped me out with the video and we really went tagging and wheat pasting in LA. Don Tyler (director) was nervous we were going to get arrested by the cops, but we did it late at night and were with pros so it was cool. Half of the video was shot in LA and the other half in Cleveland while I was on tour.
Who is your favorite interviewer?
You, of course. Duh.
