J.J. Abrams will produce and possibly direct a film based on a Wired article titled "The Untold Story of the World's Biggest Diamond Heist," which was written by Joshua Davis. Paramount has bought the rights to the story. Abrams, who is gearing up for the summer release of the hotly-anticipated Star Trek relaunch, which he directed, will produce via his Bad Robot shingle. Davis will also take a producer role on the film.
The article was published in the April issue of the magazine and tells the true story of a diamond heist that occurred in Antwerp, Belgium, in early 2003. A group of Italian thieves penetrated an unthinkable 10 layers of security to reach a vault beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center. The group made out with a reported $100 million in diamonds, gold, jewelry, and other precious metals. Davis spent six years researching and interviewing the heist's ring leader, who is serving time in a Belgian prison. The leader revealed how he carried off the heist in the French language.
