I'm Still Here, the Casey Affleck-directed documentary that follows ex-actor Joaquin Phoenix, who was nominated for an Academy Award when he stepped into Johnny Cash's all black outfit and boots, who quit acting to try and become a hip-hop star. The career transition was not a smooth one and the film tracks the progress… or lack thereof! Many in industry insiders thought it was a huge publicity hoax on Phoenix's part. Whatever the case, the doc will be released via Magnolia Pictures on September 10.
The company describes the film as, "sometimes funny, sometimes shocking and always riveting, the film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads. Defying expectations, it deftly explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye" in an official statement. Or it could just call it a mockumentary, since no one knows if Phoenix is serious or not.
Does anyone remember Phoenix's d-bag appearance on David Letterman's show, where he had a mountain man beard and was a total dick? It was parodied by Ben Stiller at the Oscars, and was grist for many comedy mills to come.
Is this a serious career switch? Should Phoenix go back to acting?
