Joe Gibbs passed away from a heart attack at a Jamaican hospital last Thursday, February 21. The highly influential reggae producer was 65 years old.
Gibbs got his start as a recording engineer in the states and later shifted to vinyl sales back home in Jamaica. Gibbs' Amalgamated label has long been regarded as a key factor in the rise of rocksteady, a bass-heavy spin on ska. He's also known for his "Mighty Two" production work alongside Errol Thompson and the duo's house band, the Professionals (featuring Sly & Robbie as its rhythm section), and the international hit "Someone Loves You Honey," a cover of Charley Pride's country tune. Pride sued Gibbs over the song, however, leading to much financial ruin late in his life.
According to Pitchfork, an extensive Joe Gibbs Reggae Anthology is due out in May through North Parade.
