Joe Johnston to Direct Captain America

Director Joe Johnston has agreed to direct First Avenger: Captain America for Marvel Studios. A writer for the script will be hired imminently.

Johnston has had a long career in the movie business, having directed 2001's Jurassic Park III and 2004's Hidalgo. Johnston has worked as a designer on Star Wars and storyboarded for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Johnston also lensed the remake of the much-anticipated The Wolfman, which is due out next year.

The Captain America character has not hit the big screen since the 1990s-released Captain America, which was poorly received and cheaply produced by 21st Century Films. The Marvel/Johnston film will be set in the era of World War II. Marvel already has given the film a May 6, 2011 release date.
