John Lennon or Jane Austen? Well, popular vote selected John Lennon's image to be stamped on a commemorative coin sold by the UK Royal Mint. Lennon was selected over other British cultural figures, like Pride & Prejudice and Emma author Jane Austen. Wow. The Brits really love Lennon.
The Associated Press reports that the coin has a face value of five pounds, which is the equivalent of $8. The purchase price, however, is $72, so that's one expensive coin. Well, not really, since it's for collectible purposes. The limited-edition coin depicts a later-period Lennon, with long hair, sideburns and circular specs.
I wonder how Paul McCartney feels about this news.
What British figure would you like to see embossed on a coin?
