John Lennon's Piano Goes on Peace Tour
Tue, 03 Apr 2007 11:02:27
When George Michael purchased John Lennon's old piano for £1.67 million in 2000, he had loftier goals than using it to write a followup to "I Want Your Sex." Michael is sending the piano out on tour, bringing it to sites of past violence in an effort to promote peace. This week, the piano visits the site of Martin Luther King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee; previously, it showed up on the infamous "grassy knoll" in Dallas, Texas, where conspiracy theorists believe a second gunman participated in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
"The selection of this site evokes a deep sense of emotion for everyone," Michael said of tomorrow's piano display in Memphis. "Capturing the image of this special piano on which a song of peace was composed is part of the heartbeat of this project."
No word yet on where the piano, a Steinway Model Z upright, will appear next.
