Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of actor John Travolta and his longtime wife, actress Kelly Preston, died on Friday in the Bahamas, apparently after suffering a seizure in the bathroom and hitting his head on the bathtub at the family's vacation home. Nannies were present at the home during the incident, despite the fact that initial reports indicated that the teenager had been unsupervised. A house caretaker found the teen, who had a history of seizures, unconscious in a bathroom late in the morning. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Michael Ossi, an attorney for the Travolta family, said in a statement released by publicists that Jett died suddenly. It was revealed today that Jett was taking medications for his seizures for years, but he eventually went off the meds after they lost their effectiveness. Preston revealed that the boy became very ill when he was just two years old and was eventually diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, which leads to inflammation of a young child's blood vessels. There have been reports, however, that the boy was autistic, which is a disease not recognized by the Church of Scientology, to which the family belongs.
Travolta and Preston also have a daughter, Ella Bleu, 8, and are said to be extremely heartbroken over the loss. The family released a statement yesterday, thanking fans for their outpouring of support in this time of need and saying that they are "heartbroken that our time with him was so brief." The Travoltas are hoping to fly their son's body back to the United States by midweek, for a burial and funeral in Florida, where they also maintain a home.
