In order to get into the mindset of Hesher's eponymous fire-starting, dope-smoking, change-sparking anti-hero, Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned right to his iPod.
"For any character, music is always important to me" exclaims the actor. "In this case, I definitely listened to a lot of Metallica and The Misfits, but I was also listening to stuff you wouldn't expect like Louis Prima, Shirley Temple, Wagner, and things like that."
That diverse smattering of tunes certainly informed the character's unpredictability and, as a result, made Hesher even more tangible and real. As "Fight Fire With Fire" and "Battery" blare from his van, Hesher teaches his young grieving friend T.J. [Devin Brochu] how to be himself via some unique tough love.
Gordon-Levitt infuses Hesher with just the right amount of grit and heart, yielding his most gripping performance yet. However, it came quite naturally for Gordon-Levitt who dug back into his own childhood for Hesher's sonic palette.
With a smile, the actor reminisces about the first time that he heard Metallica.
"My big brother listened to Metallica," he goes on. "I found them as I was discovering harder music. I knew who Guns N' Roses was and I liked them, but my brother was like, 'Metallica is it!' I asked, 'Can I listen to them?' He just said, 'I don't know if you'll like it; it might be too hard for you.' Then I wanted to hear them of course! [Laughs] It was Ride the Lightning, and I liked it! I grew my hair long so I could headbang to it."
Now, he grew his hair long for one of the best performances of his career thus far. Everything comes full circle.
Hesher hits theaters everywhere on May 3, 2011!
