Judge Rules Fox Has Stake in Watchmen

Fox has a copyright stake in the eagerly anticipated, forthcoming comic book film
Watchmen, which will be released by Warner Brothers on March 6. The judge presiding over the case between the two studios issued the ruling late last week.
Judge Gary Feess claimed that Fox "owns a copyright interest, consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the Watchmen motion picture." This preliminary ruling may stall Warner Brothers' release date roll out plans. The case has a trial date of January 20 in place, but this ruling could force WB to settle monetarily if it hopes to keep the release date in tact. Fox originally developed Watchmen but eventually passed on doing the film before Warner Brothers picked up the property, which floated between studios in the interim. Fox then claimed that it still had rights to the film and filed suit. The mammoth studios were headed to court to publicly battle over the film but this ruling may force a settlement.
