Justin Bieber is back, and he's better than ever.
"Boyfriend" formally establishes Bieber as the reigning king of pop. It's an evolution for the artist, while preserving the hallmarks of his sound and style that made him a superstar in the first place.
At a near whisper, he assures his girl, "If I was your boyfriend, I'd never let you go." Then, in a clever turn, he signals the "falsetto" to kick in as an acoustic guitar resounds.
It's a quick surprise that shows how far Bieber has come. Suddenly, "Boyfriend" launches into the hook of the year. Back to the next verse, he even references Buzz Lightyear. There's been magic at the heart of every bit of his output thus far, but "Boyfriend" brings Bieber to a new plateau altogether. Nodding to Justin Timberlake and Usher with a Michael Jackson-style bombast, Bieber does a whole lot more than bring sexy back; he redefines it for the 21st century.
Ultimately, "Boyfriend" isn't only the start of Bieber's next phase. It's also a new dawn for pop. This gives us a myriad of reasons why millions of girls worldwide would be elated to call him "Boyfriend". Meet the new king…
