Kat Graham "Against the Wall" EP Review — 5 out of 5 stars

As far as 21st century pop goes, Kat Graham's the best out there.
Make no mistake about it; she's on her way to becoming one of the world's biggest stars, and her "formal" debut EP, Against the Wall, boasts shimmering sonic proof. With overpowering soul a la early Janet Jackson and fearless bravado that nods to M.I.A., Graham essentially merges the best of a couple worlds and then blasts everything out to a universe of her own design.
In her little galaxy, spacey syncopation rumbles through the irresistible debut single, "Put Your Graffiti On Me". A sexy, slithering beat bounces with street sheen, and the singer's clever, catchy "come hither" verses. Once the hook comes in, as the spray paint cans wobble, she's got complete hold and you've been tagged for good.
An '80s-style synth colors "Heartkiller", while the warbling production is decidedly futuristic. Graham oscillates from an impressive falsetto into another seductive shake. The EP's centerpiece remains "Wanna Say". It's an evocative and emotional ballad that's still got a vital energy coursing through it. The track illuminates Graham's vocal prowess, and it's a massive hit…
Not only is it an a propos description of the music, but "Supadope" waves the flag for femme fatales of all kinds. These four songs show multiple facets of Graham, yet there's even more to come when she drops her full-length debut.
Finally, someone who's willing to take chances has stepped up to the pop plate. Kat's sassy, strong, and soulful. In other words, she's a true artist. This is one of the best debuts of 2012 and the start of something very special. Graham's not going to be Against the Wall for long, she's about to be at the top of the game.
