There's a world of rom com scripts with her name stamped all over them! But she may not even consider them. Hollywood's worst kept secret is now official: Katherine Heigl has left popular medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which is something that has been brewing for what feels like years. She took a three-month leave from the series in order to spend time with her family, and her new motherhood hastened her desire to leave the show for good.
Heigl told Entertainment Weeklythat " I am done. We just finalized our agreement. Everyone had been working really hard to find an amicable and gracious way of letting go and moving on. It's sad but it's what I wanted." Let's see what tune Heigl sings when she can't snag any more roles. Surely it won't be "It's what I wanted!"
Heigl claims she is leaving the hit ABC sudser because of her family. She is married to singer Josh Kelly and the couple recently adopted a special needs child, daughter Naleigh, from South Korea. Heigl indicated that she is not leaving the series to advance her film career, either. "I started a family and it changed everything for me. It changed my desire to work full-time," she said. Well, when you have buckets of money in the bank, you have that luxury, Kate.
Don't expect a big sendoff or cliffhanger ending for her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens. Heigl admitted to EW that the January 21 episode was indeed her final appearance on the show. She will not appear in the season's final five episodes. While this does leave the door open for her return or even future guest appearances, Heigl isn't fretting. "I know I'm disappointing the fans," she said. "I just had to make a choice. I hope I made the right one."
We don't know about you, but Kat seems to be a bit of an ingrate and too big for her britches. While we respect and admire her desire to devote more time to her child, she does seem to be taking her success a bit for granted. Remember when she took herself out of Emmy contention one year, claiming that the Grey's writers didn’t give her the type of material to work with that would warrant a nomination? And after her comedy Knocked Up was one of the biggest hits of 2007, cementing her status as a bona fide movie star, she went on to criticize the subject matter in a major magazine. Looking gift horses in the mouth isn't a very prudent way to act in Hollywood, for God's sake.
Do you think Seattle Grace has seen the last of Izzie, and ultimately, of Heigl?
