Keanu Reeves will star in 47 Ronin, an 18th-Century epic for Universal Pictures. The film will be based on the true story of Samurai swordsmen in Japan who avenged the death of their master.
Wanted scribe Chris Morgan is writing the script, while Scott Stuber will produce via Stuber Productions. Reeves will play one of the swordsmen seeking revenge. Morgan is tailoring the script so that Reeves, who himself is half-Asian, can fit his character. In modern-day Japan, the group and their slain master are celebrated for seeking revenge in an attack that took place on December 14, 1702. The film will be a stylized retelling of the story, fusing fantasy with large scale battle scenes. The film will begin shooting next year after a director is in place.
Reeves is back on screens tomorrow in Fox's big-budget remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.
