On Friday, Kendrick Lamar, OutKast, El-P, and Chuck D joined Q-Tip on his Beats 1 radio show, "Abstract Radio," to discuss the impact Phife Dawg had on their lives and careers. Phife Dawg passed away March 22nd. During the show, Q-Tip played a two-hour mix of A Tribe Called Quest songs, including live shows and remixes from the 2015 re-release of People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.
Pitchfork reports, "André and Big Boi both cited Tribe as their main inspiration for starting OutKast. Kendrick said that, growing up, he listened to only gangster rap and Low End Theory. He said "Scenario" was his favorite song at the time. "It's only right that I homage to Phife and the whole Tribe for birthin' what I do on that microphone and what I do on that stage," he said."
Phife Dawg, whose real name is Malik Taylor, grew up in Queens and befriended future bandmate Q-Tip at an early age. The trio known as A Tribe Called Quest was completed with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and were formed in 1988. Taylor had a history of health issues. He had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 20, and in 2008 he underwent a kidney transplant. For more on Phife Dawg and A Tribe Called Quest, check out:
