Last night, MTV's Video Music Awards took place in Los Angeles, California. Katy Perry hosted this year's award show, which, as ever, boasted performances from many of today's biggest artists.

Kendrick Lamar opened the show's on-stage highlights with the dynamic double of "DNA." and "HUMBLE." The video for the latter went on to be the star of the night, picking up 5 awards in total, including the top prize — Video of the Year.

Ed Sheeran won the Artist of the Year award, and put on a stunning performance in teaming up with Song of the Summer winner Lil Uzi Vert for a medley of "Shape of You" and "XO Tour Llif3".

Taylor Swift added a new Moon Person to her already over-stuffed award shelf when she won Best Collaboration for "I Don't Wanna Live Forever", her 50 Shades Darker track with Zayn. She also took advantage of the big night out to premiere the video for her newest single/talk of the internet track "Look What You Made Me Do" (which was especially interesting given the identity of the VMA host)...

After Jared Leto's moving tribute to Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, the event also featured Leto's 30 Seconds to Mars making the live debut of their new track, "Walk on Water". The band used thermal imaging technology to deliver one of the most impressive and dissected moments of the star-studded night.

MTV's career achievement award, the Video Vanguard went to Pink, who accepted the honor with a moving speech about the power of self-belief, a fitting sentiment on a night of self-made and social media supported stardom.

Meanwhile, The Weeknd missed his scheduled performance and didn't end up making it to the event at all. Abel Tesfaye was nominated for no less than four awards, but even if he had been in attendance, he would have gone home empty-handed...
