Since Kendrick Lamar's show-stealing performance at The GRAMMYs, there has been a swirl of questions as to where pieces of the medley came from. As it turns out, there's a large amount of material that Kendrick was unable to release on To Pimp A Butterfly (Top Dawg, Aftermath, Interscope). The Compton-born rapper said in an interview on 2 Dope Boyz, "I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love [with] where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album."
This isn't the first time Kendrick has performed unreleased music to a nationally televised audience. In December of 2014, he unveiled an unnamed track when he was the final musical act on The Colbert Report. He did the same this past January on an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Kendrick Lamar won five GRAMMYs Monday night, sweeping the rap section of the awards, including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance. His performance also included To Pimp A Butterfly songs "The Blacker the Berry" and "Alright."
The rapper is currently scheduled for seven shows in March and July, beginning with an appearance at the Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, March 4-6, then followed with dates in New Zealand and Australia. Lamar will also play shows in the U.K., Ireland, and Portugal come July. For more on Kendrick Lamar, check out:
