Kendrick Lamar is an inspirational artist for many people. His ability to perform the kind of alchemy that turns social injustice into art, or the human condition into a deeply personal expression has secured his position as an artist of unwavering value to the world beyond his genre.
Now the artist has become subject of a piece of art. A painting of the west coast rapper, created by a Colorado high school student, has won the 2017 Congressional Art Competition.
The portrait of Lamar will be on display in the U.S. Capital, as the artist is honored by the nation. The winner, Tiona Cordova, was selected by Colorado congressman Scott Tipton and will now be honored in a special awards ceremony in Washington D.C. — an event which will mark the start of a 12 month hanging of the painting in the home of the U.S. Congress.
Meanwhile Lamar will be kicking of a North American tour in support of his latest album, DAMN. later this summer. With the first date in Phoenix on July 12th he will also be passing through Brooklyn, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Philadelphia and a host of other major U.S. locations.
So, with fan speculation and hopes that Lamar will enter politics it seems that for twelve years at least he will be holding a secure place at the heart of government.
