Kid Cudi Casts a Spell with WZRD "Brake" — 4.5 out of 5 stars

"I'm going blind down here," intones Kid Cudi over a haze of psychedelic fuzz and synths.
However, Cudi's eyes are wide open creatively on "Brake", the first official song from his forthcoming WZRD album due out January 30, 2012.
Collaborating with Dot Da Genius, Cudi—the new king of all things alternative—points his scepter into a realm that neither rock nor electronic music has yet evolved to. It's distinctly down-tempo, gorgeously spacey, and elegantly earthy. The track begins with what sounds like distorted transmissions from another galaxy funneled through a guitar amp. Then it morphs with a slow, lilting build, laying down space for Cudi's voice to shine. The dreamy melody punctuates the artist's lyrical poetry.
He ruminates on loneliness somewhere in outerspace as a percussive stomp commences behind him. Each hit feels timed to his flawless crooning. This Man on the Moon completely flips the script in the most beautiful and brilliant way possible. His melancholy is more melodic than ever, and he challenges the status quo once again.
Even though the song's called "Brake", it feels like Cudi is moving at light speed towards revolution. Once WZRD hits, nothing will be the same, and Cudi wouldn't have it any other way.
