While accepting his Great Expectations Award at the Detroit branch of the NAACP's 56th annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner on Sunday, Kid Rock announced $100,000 in donations: five $10,000 grants to Detroit-based organizations and $50,000 to the American Red Cross for tornado victims in US Southern states.
Big ups to Kid Rock for his generosity to those in desperate need.
The award came with some controversy, as there were people who were at odds over the NAACP's decision to honor Rock since he uses a Confederate flag in his stage shows and videos. Despite the existence of detractors, Rock received a standing ovation when he announced his donations. Billboard reports that in his remarks while accepting the award, Rock explained that "I've never flown that flag with hate in my heart, not one ounce." He said that his use of the image was an "homage" to Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and that he made the donations to "turn a negative into a positive."
