Killer Mike has been honored by the Georgia Senate for being an "Outstanding Ambassador to the city of Atlanta and for his role in improving the city's water infrastructure."
Attending the state capitol, the Run the Jewels rapper delivered a speech where he discussed education, housing, and other ways which the city of Atlanta could improve the lives of it's citizens.
Addressing state senators Killer Mike said, "Our children deserve decent housing. Gentrification should not make children poor. Our school systems deserve more attention. Our teachers deserve more money. Our firemen deserve more money. And our policemen deserve more than new guns. They deserve to have enough cops on the street to be involved in the community."
The honor, awarded by the Georgia Senate, comes after the rapper lent his name "Driller Mike" to a custom made drill used by Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management to help build an emergency backup water system in the city.
In State Resolution 315, the Georgia Senate recognized the contributions of both Killer Mike and Driller Mike. The resolution stated; "Michael Render has used his platform as a Grammy-winning rapper to help bring the value of water to mainstream audiences. He has been quoted as saying, 'I don't ever want to cry for Atlanta like I've cried for places like Flint. Water is a right that people deserve. This is an equitable distribution of water. I drink it out of the tap, so that matters to me. I'm proud of Atlanta because we will always talk from a place of power.'"
After making his speech, Killer Mike posted about the experience on Instagram, and also shared a local news story about his day at the state capitol.
The rapper, who has been a vocal political activist, and campaigned on behalf of Bernie Sanders in 2016, promised that he will remain politically active. He also pledged to back state senator Vincent Fort's bid for Atlanta mayor.
For fans of Killer Mike, the honor awarded by his hometown is rightly deserved, and for those unfamiliar with his philanthropic interests his honor has put light on some of the more positive news to emerge from the rap game. Congratulations and applause all round.
I'm In GA's state Capital. The place where law is written. In these hollowed halls have walked the most powerful people from my state. As a kid I came here via school field trips and those trips are a part of my love affair with my states political history and the political process. I was awarded a proclamation from my state this morning. US Sen. Nan Orrock awarded me and after a short speech by her and myself she led me around from introductions and pictures. I shook hands with Dems and GOP'ers and expressed my desire to see Ga push for What is right and Equitable for the Common man and woman. I wanna see this day be the start of another kids love for politics and like me that kid can go on to effect change in a bigger way. Thank u to all I met with and greeted today. Your hard work is not unnoticed and wether D or R I hope you fight to make Georgia solid for all Georgians. #YesIWoreMyChain #HellTheRuralLegislatorsWorkJeansNBoots ð #IPicturedMySelfHereAsAKid #AllBlackWithTheChainLikeDMCandRun #RIPKMJ #ITookTheChainOffForMySpeechTho #TheRepublicansToldMyWifeThatWasClassy #HeHadOnBoots ð¤ #UmmaKeepShhhDoe ð
