There's still nothing like a tangible musical experience.
The Internet is great and all, but downloads and online music interviews will never truly compare to a first-class physical release. This is a web site, but we're going to stick by that claim! Now, that's why the 'ZinePak is such an incredible brand. 'ZinePak pairs a CD with an in-depth, all-encompassing magazine featuring interviews, pictures, and more. So far, 'ZinePaks have been dedicated to Selena Gomez, Scotty McCreery, and more. However, the company's latest release is its biggest and best yet.
The 47th Annual ACM Awards Spotlight 'ZinePak boasts a CD of tracks from the Academy of Country Music Awards 2012 nominees and fresh faces as well as a 120-page magazine featuring exclusive interviews, a ballot, and cool magnet. It dropped in Walmart and on Walmart.com March 20 just in time for the LIVE broadcast of the Awards this Sunday April 1, 2012 at 8pm ET on CBS. It's only $7 by the way. You can't beat that…
In this exclusive interview, ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino speaks to 'ZinePak founders Kim Kaupe and Brittany Hodak about this special release and so much more.
Where did the idea for the 'ZinePak initially come about?
Kim Kaupe: With Brittany's background in music and mine in magazine publishing, we both wanted to continue to explore our fields in a new way. We knew fans still wanted an experience with their favorite artists. We have found a way to deliver the sounds of their favorite artists with all the information they could want to know. It makes the process of listening to an album an engaging, multi-sensory experience.
Given the fan fervor, was the format conducive to the country genre?
Brittany Hodak: Country is a natural fit for 'ZinePak for a few reason. First, country music is about telling stories—and the 'ZinePak heightens those stories more than a jewel case or digital download ever could. Second, the country audience tends to skew a bit more physical than other genres (compared to digital). Lastly, there is a long, rich tradition of country artists connecting with their fans. Our product helps that interaction happen remotely. The fans get some of the same feelings as a meet and greet or personal experience, from the comfort of their own homes.
What ties all of the artists on the CD together for you? Do they all share the same spirit or spark in some ways?
Kim Kaupe: The artists on this package are willing to go the extra mile for their fans. They made sure we included new and interesting facts in this package that their fans had never heard before. They wanted to be involved with building the best possible package for the fan, and their love of their fans really shines through.
Do you have a favorite song or interview from the package?
Brittany Hodak: It's so hard to choose! The CD itself is amazing; more than half of the tracks have been Top 5 songs, and several have gone to Number One! The artists and labels were very generous with their song selections, and this piece really showcases the ACM Awards' best and brightest.
Kim Kaupe: With the music it is so hard to pick a favorite! For the interviews, Thompson Square came up with a pretty hilarious smear campaign for one answer that I think the fans will enjoy.
Is it also like a multimedia program to the ACM in some ways?
Brittany Hodak: It is! The 'ZinePak gives the Academy a platform to let fans know about some of the great events that happen during ACM Week in Vegas and share their exciting history.
Do you feel like this captures some the old school grassroots excitement for music that existed in independent magazines before the internet and blogs took over?
Brittany Hodak: We'd like to think so! That's exactly what we're trying to do. In a lot of ways, we try to recapture what the LP experience was like a generation ago. Before fans could go online and find out everything about an artist in 30 seconds, the LP packaging played a large role in the artist discovery process. Traditional CD releases often feel sterile and impersonal. We're trying to change that!
Tell us about other 'ZinePaks you have done?
Kim Kaupe: We have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic artists and brands over the past year. A few of our past projects include Scotty McCreery, Selena Gomez, three projects for the KIDZ BOP brand, and brand partners like Dr Pepper.
Where can you buy 'Zinepak?
Kim Kaupe: You can find the 2012 ACM Awards 'ZinePak at your local Walmart and on Walmart.com.
What's next for you?
Brittany Hodak: Our next 'ZinePak release will be in stores April 3rd. It's a deluxe version of Rascal Flatts' new album Changed, and we think fans are going to love it! There will be another 15 - 20 'ZinePaks released before the end of the year. Fans can visit us at Facebook.com/ZinePak for information on all upcoming releases.
