Kvelertak Talk "Meir"

All hell breaks loose on Kvelertak's second full-length album, Meir.
Their cataclysmic marriage of black metal and rock 'n' roll makes for an incendiary concoction that's utterly intoxicating. There's nobody out there quite like the Norwegian outfit, and that's why they're so undeniably refreshing for heavy music. They're going to blast a hole right through the genre this year, as Meir is one of the most thrilling metal records of 2013.
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Kvelertak singer Erlend Hjelvik talks Meir, The Evil Dead, and so much more.
What's the story behind "Nekrokosmos"?
It's a story about the antichrist figure coming out of a black hole in space. He was out in a little graveyard. It's one of the heavier songs so it's got heavier lyrics. It's evil [Laughs].
What influenced you lyrically?
This time, I was influenced lyrically by Blue Öyster Cult and certain black metal bands. Then, there were a lot of old horror movies and documentaries. Blue Öyster Cult's lyrics are great. I love them. There are those visuals of the ice melting.
Where did "Tordenbrak" come from?
That's actually a song our drummer Kjetil Gjermundrød made. We helped with the songwriting, but he really came up with it. It's one of the more serious lyrics on the album. The lyrics are about what's fucked up in the world, and I blame it mostly on the Internet. Everything is too connected these days. The world is getting too small. That's what I think anyway.
What artists shaped you?
I go back to Metallica again and again. All of their songs are on Spotify, and I've been listening to them a lot again. They're super influential. Otherwise, I stopped listening to the stuff I listened to as a kid.
Who's on your playlist now?
I've got to check my phone [Laughs]. The new Darkthrone album is awesome. I've been listening to that a lot. I just recorded another CD with my other band Djevel. They're a black metal band. I've been listening to that. It just got mixed. You have to check it out.
If you were to compare Meir to a movie or a combination of movies, what would you compare it to?
That's a hard question [Laughs]. Let me think. I'll just say Evil Dead. That's one of my favorite movies. I love all of them.
Is that your favorite in the series?
I like Evil Dead 2 better than Evil Dead. I prefer the second one. I just liked it a little bit more. I think Army of Darkness is my favorite.
Tell us about the Dave Grohl meeting…
That's the only time I've been starstruck. After we played, somebody from the label told us Dave Grohl was going to give us a gold record, and I couldn't believe it. He was an awesome guy. He was really easy to talk to.
