Lauren Christy, a songwriter in the LA-based production trio The Matrix, has landed back on top of the charts with mega-hit "Tonight" (I'm Loving You)," which is performed by Enrique Iglesias, in one of her first collaborations with red hot producer DJ Frank E. This comes almost a decade after her first #1 in April of 2002, when she co wrote Avril Lavigne's single "Complicated", which spent eleven weeks at the top of the Billboard charts, followed by two more consecutive #1s with "Sk8ter Boy" and "I'm With You" during the same album cycle.
"With my first big run of success I figured wow, I won the lottery, but to have this kind of success happen again has really made me realize that it wasn't just good luck, I was blessed with the gift of songwriting, and I thank God for that." Christy said.
Adding to the excitement, Lauren penned the first commercial release for this season of American Idol for 26-year-old, Chris Medina, the barista that captured the hearts of America after his tearful departure from Idol last week. "What Are Words," produced by hit-maker Rodney Jerkins, was inspired by Medina's emotional story of his wheelchair-bound fiancée Juliana, injured in an automobile accident on the eve of their wedding. Christy commented, "As soon as I heard Chris say 'What kind of a man would I be if I left the woman I love when she needs me the most', the song kind of wrote itself, every word came rushing right through me, it was such an emotional experience."
Since the early 2000s, Lauren Christy has primarily worked with her partners; songwriter Graham Edwards (ex-husband and father to her two children) and songwriter and remixer Scott Spock in the songwriting and production team The Matrix. Over the last decade, The Matrix have been one of the most sought after teams in the music business thanks to their numerous chart topping hits. Music by their new artist Liam Edwards is due out this year.
Lauren Christy, who is a three-time Grammy nominee and winner of the Ivor Novello (which is the British Grammy), recently started collaborating with other writers and producers outside of The Matrix trio. Christy is currently collaborating with super producers Rodney Jerkins, Wayne Wilkins, Tricky Stewart and Andre Lindall to name a few, and working closely with songwriter Shy Carter and two Universal Music developing artists, Avery and Jon West.
