While promoting her Cheek to Cheek duets album with Tony Bennett, out today, September 23, Lady Gaga spoke about her much-maligned and oft-criticized ARTPOP album, almost a year removed from it release.
Addressing the management change she made before the album's release, she said, "It certainly affected my mind during ARTPOP. I would have to say that whole situation had less to do with creativity differences and more to do with me really needing some time from myself to be creative. My schedule was way too difficult. I was not able to keep up and my whole business became very focused on making as much money as possible as quickly as possible, which is really not where my heart is. My integrity as a musician is so much more important to me than money."
Gaga continued, "While I was making ARTPOP, I was very tired. I'm actually very proud of ARTPOP. As much as it's had a lot of criticism, I think a lot of that had to with where I am in my career, I've been on top for a long time, I think it's the nature of this industry — we love to build them up to tear them down."
Gaga is so honest. She doesn't sugarcoat how poorly the album was received nor does she make excuses nor does she backtrack; it's refreshing that she stands behind an album that was felt universally disliked. At least she isn't like, "Yeah, it sorta sucks, looking back on it." She stands by her work and for that, we applaud her. She lives for the "Applause," you know? Natch!
And she hits on a crucial point. Yes, we love to tear down our pop stars after building them up but we also love to see them comeback. Like B. Spears!
Do you think Gaga's next album and the official ARTPOP follow up will slay?
