Lady Gaga's upcoming concert in Indonesia has been canceled after police in Jakarta revoked her performance permit, caving to pressure applied by Islamic extremist groups.

Religious groups in the country were heavily protesting the gig and now, police officials in Jakarta have axed the permit for her gig at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, which is in central Jakarta.

A spokesman for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police says, "Our proposal is based on the opinions of Muslim groups who believe that her stage act is not compatible with the culture of our country because we are Muslim. Have you seen her videos? She exposed too much of her skin."

SPIN reports that extremist fringe Muslim groups have been threatening to "physical force to prevent her from stepping off the plane." That's pretty excessive, no?

So authorities bowed down to the pressure and pulled the permit and the plug. Local police could not guarantee Gaga's safety or the safety of her fans, so this was likely the path of least resistance.

However, despite the protesters, Lady Gaga has received support from Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, the Nahdlatul Ulama. The group considers the ban too much and does not object.

Muhammad Imdadun Rahmat, deputy secretary general of Nahdlatul Ulama, told Thejakartapost.com, "The police should not have gone as far as banning the concert. They should not intervene against the freedom of expression."

His thinking is quite modern. Poor Gaga. This must be a bum out, since the show was sold out and the venue holds over 50,000 people.

What is your take on this cancelation?
