It's the end of an era, as CNN talk show host Larry King steps down from his perch at CNN for the past 25 years. King, who has dealt with recent marital troubles, announced on Tuesday that he will leave the air this fall. King also holds the record for hosting the longest-running show on the same network in the same time slot.
"It's time to hang up my nightly suspenders," King said in a message sent to fans via his Twitter account. He will continue to do an occasional special for the network. King said that he was not pressured to leave and that he began to consider stepping down after he interviewed Cleveland Cavaliers basketball star and hotly pursued free agent LeBron James. He had interviews Bill Gates, Barack Obama and Lady Gaga in the same week, illustrating the eclectic type of personalities that King was able to speak to.
"I said, 'I can't top this,'" King admitted in an interview Tuesday. So he is going out on top He continued, "I'm tired of the nightly grind. I do want to do other things but I want to stay at CNN in some way ... There's a case of great mixed emotions."
It is estimated that King conducted 50,000 interviews during his 53-year broadcasting career.
