Lauryn Hill recently announced a three-day charity festival presented in association with TIDAL X, Pitchfork reports. Diaspora Calling! began last night (the day it was announced) and continues through Friday (April 15), when Lauryn Hill plays at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre. The festival will "present a series of events, focusing on various forms of visual art, and featuring performances by artists from Africa, and throughout the African diaspora." The theatre's lobby has been converted into a gallery. Last night, Lauryn Hill introduced the gallery at a private opening featuring music by DJ Spinna, DJ Juls, and others. As of today, the gallery is open to the public April 14-15 from noon to 4 p.m.
Friday night caps off the festival with a night of music headlined by Lauryn Hill. April 15 will feature performances by Machel Montano (Trinidad), Stephen "Ragga" Marley (Jamaica), Stonebwoy (Ghana), and more.
Ms. Hill describes the festival in a statement, via Pitchfork:
"Diaspora Calling! is a collection of works intended to celebrate the rich tapestry of artists from the African Diaspora while also illumining persistent and irrepressible themes... Even if we work independently, we are a resounding collective voice, both reconciling and embracing our relationship to history, our origins, our future and to ourselves."
Lauryn Hill is currently on tour. Following her show at Flatbush, Brooklyn's Kings Theatre she has more upcoming dates in the States and the Caribbean. On April 24, Hill will be among the headliners at the Tobago Jazz Experience Festival, that takes place at Buccoo, Trinidad and Tobago. After that, she'll play a series of concerts in the Southern States at places like Houston, TX's Revention Music Center and Atlanta, GA's Chastain Park Amphitheatre, before rounding off her tour at Atlantic City, NJ's Boardwalk Hall on May 13.
