Leonard Cohen was one of the biggests losses from the world of music in 2016. His death has left a vacuum which will undoubtedly never be filled, since no artist has delivered such a measured reflection of the human condition in song form. His lyrical prowess was equalled by an enquiry into the state of the universe, and his compassion for all things was expressed in a flawlessly uncynical, and untarnished meter.
In tribute to Cohen, a host of artists will be gathering at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, on January 24, 2017, for a show called "Sincerely, L. Cohen: A Celebration of Leonard Cohen." The title is borrowed from Cohen's lyric in his song "Famous Blue Raincoat" from the 1971 album Songs of Love and Hate.
Artists appearing at the tribute are Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, Will Sheff of Okkervil River, Josh Ritter, Amy Helm, Lenny Kaye from the Patti Smith Group, Teddy Thompson, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Ian O'Neill of Deer Tick, Dave Harrington, Hannah Cohen, Osei Essed from The Woes, Cassandra Jenkins. The house band will feature Josh Kaufman, Walt Martin, Annie Nero, and Ray Rizzo.
