A life-size, gold sculpture of Kanye West that depicts the artist as Jesus has appeared on Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard. The piece is titled "False Idol," and was made by L.A. street artist Plastic Jesus. The statue can be found on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.
The sculpture has Kanye's arms outstretched with nails in his hands, and he is wearing a crown of thorns. He also is wearing a variety of gold necklaces and has a pair of Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers on.
Plastic Jesus told The Hollywood Reporter, "Kanye is a genius. He is a brilliant writer and producer, but we've built him up to a god-like idol. Look at what happened to him at the end of last year when he went into a mental facility suffering from anxiety, stress and, I think, depression." The artist added, "We've seen it before with people like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. The same people who put him into a God-like place are the same yapping at his heels for a piece of flesh when something happens." And later he explained, "The piece is intended to be as critical of us as consumers and the media as it is of Kanye himself. We've created this idol from somebody who is clearly talented."
The gold idol is a collaborative piece between Plastic Jesus and Ginger, who last year made headlines for the nude Trump sculptures that popped up in major cities this past summer. On February 24th, the statue will appear at Plastic Jesus' exhibition with Billy Morrison called Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion. The showcase will take place at Gibson Brands Sunset in West Hollywood and opens to the public on February 25th. This Yeezus may not walk, but in this case all that glitters is certainly gold.
