Oh, Lil Bub. Lil Bub, Lil Bub, Lil Bub! How your owner exploits you! It must be exhausting—all those book signings and festival appearances, not to mention all the napping required to keep up with such a schedule. But, with or against your will, all that hawking really works out great for the millions of fans who just can’t get enough of your sweet, furry, droopy lil self. And surely those internet hordes will love this fancy lil feast of news: You’re releasing your debut album, Science & Magic, on December 4th via Joyful Noise Recordings.
What does it mean, philosophically speaking, for a cat to make an album? With Lil Bub, her silence might contain the cryptic answer. But it’s her vocal ability—that motor boat, contented purr of hers—which will likely be more prominent on the new 10-song recording, a mostly-electronic score composed by Bub’s “creative vessel” Matt Tobey. Tobey’s friend and producer Mike Bridasky (aka Bub’s owner) also had a hand in the magic, though we’re told the entire effort was guided by Bub’s creative, mystical genius. (It must be said Science & Magic’s slick production makes Japanese cat band The Musashis look like rookie alley felines.) Take a look at the teaser trailer below for some behind the scenes footage, and this note from none other than Andrew W.K.:
"My name is Andrew W.K. and I have had the privilege of working with BUB and making music with BUB and even holding BUB in my arms. Not only is she the softest creature I have ever encountered, she is also the most musically and compassionately gifted. The songs on this album are her vision. They are by her, about her, and are her. Listening to these songs is the sonic equivalent to holding Lil BUB in your own arms."
The album is currently available for preorder via the Joyful Noise site, and 25% of total profits will be donated to Lil BUB's Big FUND for the ASPCA to benefit special needs pets.
