On Saturday, February 13, 2016 legendary performer, songwriter, and artist Lionel Richie will be feted at a Grammy®-week scheduled gala that includes a silent auction and star-studded tribute concert to benefit MusiCares, the Recording Academy-established assistance program for music people in need. Richie will join past recipients like Tony Bennett, Bono, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins, David Crosby, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Elton John, Quincy Jones, and many others as 2016 MusiCares Person of the Year.
Performances by Zac Brown, Lenny Kravitz, Lady Antebellum, John Legend, the Roots, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, Luke Bryan, and Demi Lovato are planned, with proceeds from the event going to help MusiCares' Emergency Financial Assistance and Addiction Recovery Programs.
"I consider MusiCares the Holy Grail," Richie said recently in a video chat with Pharrell Williams. "Knowing what MusiCares stands for, for me, it feels good to say, 'Yeah, I made it, but let me tell you what I'm going to do.'" To be honored at the event, Richie says, is about giving back. "Not only do you have a body of work, but you also survived the journey. I'm the eternal fan of the business, but there are also tragedies and hardships in our business," he says, citing rehab and substance abuse. "MusiCares is our safety net."
"It makes sense," says Williams. "You're incredibly generous to the people who helped get you to where you are, and that's what MusiCares is about, it's about lifting others."
