Lionsgate has acquired the rights to More Than a Game, a documentary about the formative Ohio high school years of NBA superstar LeBron James.
The film was chased by several distributors, but Lionsgate eventually won the bidding war. The film will be released in Fall 2009 in conjunction with several James-specific marketing initiatives, including the hoops star's endorsement deal with Nike, which launches shoe campaigns for James every September. The documentary is being promoted as a "feel good" story about overcoming adversity, in addition to highlighting details of James' high school career and accolades. It includes archival footage as well as new interviews conducted with several of James' varsity teammates at St. Vincent-St.Mary High School. Director Kristopher Bellman, an Akron native himself, began working on the doc nearly a decade ago.
James currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers and is a multi-millionaire. He's also one of the most instantly recognizable figures in the NBA.
