HBO is currently running a new show called The Defiant Ones — a documentary series which examines the relationship between Dr. Dre and Jimmy lovine, and a chain of events that have shaped contemporary culture.
Along with his involvement in the project, Dre has contributed a new track, "Gunfire", for the show, in which he boasts of his business abilities, and money-making chops.
The legendary MC raps in a fast flow, over a skittish beat and warped horn samples: "How you spell C.E.O.? D.R.E./ What a n**** dream he could try to be… Even though I'm from a place where n*****s got TECs, don't mean technology/ Grew up 'round Blood n*****s, real camaraderie/ Plus Crip n*****s on the other side of me/ But I'm the only nigga that I ever tried to be."
We're not sure whether "Gunfire" is a new track, recorded specifically for the show… it does seem highly appropriate… or if it's an archival track that's been brought off the shelf to support the documentary project. Either way, fans will be thrilled with the show, and to hear new material from Dre. The song is his first fresh music since 2015's Compton, the pseudo-soundtrack to the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.
The Defiant Ones series explores the unlikely partnership between Dre and lovine, from their solo careers as producer and founding member of N.W.A. to the launch of their 2006 Beats Electronics in 2006, and it's $3 billion dollar sale to Apple just eight years later.
For fans of N.W.A., Dre and modern pop culture as a whole, the documentary is compelling viewing — featuring interviews with a range of incredible artists, collaborators and peers; including Eminem, Bruce Springsteen, U2's Bono, Kendrick Lamar, Patti Smith, Gwen Stefani, Ice Cube and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.
Check out "Gunfire" below — then tune in to HBO for one of the most interesting stories from the music industry you're ever likely to hear.
