Just this week English pop singer/writer/producer Charli XCX announced that she would be dropping a massive, bombastic mixtape as a free download. The mixtape is called Number 1 Angel, and it's coming on Friday March 10th. Now she has publicly shared three of the tunes from the mix.
The star discussed the project on MistaJam's BBC Radio 1 show, which you can hear below. The tunes that Charli shared were called, "3 AM (Pull Up)," "Dreamer," and "Lipgloss".
"3 AM (Pull Up)," is a collaboration with Danish singer MØ, and represents Charli XCX's signature bubbly synth work. It's a pure pop track about late-night texts and the throes of a so-bad-it's-good relationship that eventually transforms into a proper kiss-off.
Mixtape opener "Dreamer," sees Charli playing back-and-forth verses with rising rapper and songwriter Starrah and previous collaborator Raye who was co-writer of "After the Afterparty". The final track that was shared on the BBC is called"Lipgloss" a bubblegum tune featuring glitches, textures and an stunning guest appearance in the shape of Chicago MC Cupcakke.
This mixtape, Number 1 Angel follows Charli XCX's 2016 EP, Vroom Vroom, and represents a gift to the fans who have been pestering the singer to deliver a full album. She's currently in Los Angeles and promises that she's also at work on the proper follow-up to her 2014 album, Sucker.
In a recent interview, Charli XCX spoke about her new album and continuing to work with members of the PC Music collective. "Sophie [a.k.a. Samuel Long] is pretty involved… There are some classic Sophie moments, and we reach the dip-into-the-club-at–4 a.m. kind of zone, but the thing about him is that he's also an incredible pop producer. So there's him doing pop really well on the album. And A.G. Cook is my creative director now. I was just like 'Hey, do you want to be my creative director?' He was like 'Yeah, cool.' We talk everyday about, like, nail-polish color or whatever like two gal pals. It's pretty great."
As an artist who is doing her best to keep girl power alive, and to keep well-educated, well-intentioned pop at the top of people's minds there are few more generous actions than giving away a mix of this type. Check out the tunes below, and await the full thing, just 48 hours away.
