Patti Smith and her daughter Jesse Paris Smith have partnered with Soundwalk Collective - the trio of Simone Merli, Kamran Sadeghi, and Stephan Crasneanscki - on their new album Killer Road.
The album is a tribute to Nico, and is assembled as a narrative that surrounds the singer's death in 1988.
Patti Smith recites original poems from Nico, along with lyrics over music provided by the collective. Adding to the potency of the album, melodies are performed on a harmonium owned by Nico, which was rescued from a pawn shop by Smith in 1978.
Killer Road was initially conceived as a live performance and first performed in 2014. The album is out September 2 via Sacred Bones in the US and Bella Union in the UK.
Patti Smith, speaking with Zoo, said that Nico sang in an untraditional way. "That was interesting and instructive for me when I was young because I had no ambition to be a singer. I was simply trying to deliver my poetry as she did, in a unique way."
