Just two days ago Selena Gomez teased a new track with a charismatic sequence of posts via her Instagram account. Fans patience has now been rewarded with the release of "Bad Liar", which was dropped on Wednesday night.
Built around Talking Heads classic track "Psycho Killer" from 1977, "Bad Liar" is a pretty low-key, heavily percussive piece of incredible, streamlined pop music.
"Bad Liar" was written by Gomez with help from Justin Tranter, and Julia Michaels, whose own single "Issues" is currently in the Top 20 on the Hot 100. Tranter and Michaels also contributed to previous hits from Gomez; "Hands to Myself" and "Good for You."
Speaking with Variety Tranter discussed the origins of the Talking Heads sample, saying, "Selena and Julia are Talking Heads-obsessed. So when we all got together in one room, Julia suggested, 'Why don't we just write over the bassline from 'Psycho Killer?' and we were all going, 'That sounds great!'"
David Byrne, Talking Heads' frontman, apparently thought "Bad Liar" was great too. "He heard it, loved it and approved it. To have David Byrne listed next to our names is just so cool," said Tranter.
Gomez's last album, Revival, came out in 2015. She put out "It Ain't Me," a collaboration with the electronic producer Kygo, in February. "It Ain't Me" is currently sitting at No. 11 on the Hot 100. Speaking about her new album, Gomez said "I felt sexy. I was aching to do stuff like that."
For fans of pop, and for those who simply love a good bass line "Bad Liar" is a very welcome release to top off the end of a great week of releases.
