Live Earth organizers Al Gore and Kevin Wall have decided to downscale the event this year, bringing it to India only, as opposed to the four continents and 150 acts that participated last year.
"India is not the country that created the climate crisis, but it is a developing nation and we need to open doors for local environmental organizations to create consciousness here," Wall said to The Associated Press.
"India will be among the leading powers of the global economy in the coming decades," Gore added in a satellite-beamed statement. "India has a major role to play in leadership by example for the climate crisis and sustainable development."
Jon Bon Jovi and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan will both perform at the concert in Mumbai this December. Proceeds will go to such charities as Light A Billion Lives, a nonprofit organization headed by Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri. (He shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Gore for spreading the word about global warming.)
