Live Review: Havana Brown — Gibson Amphitheatre, Los Angeles

It's not easy being a pop star or a DJ. Try both.
Not only is Havana Brown one of the best DJs in the world, she's also the most exciting new voice in pop music. Last night during her set on Pitbull's Planet Pit tour at the Gibson Amphitheatre, she riled up the packed house with impressive mixing skills first. Behind a giant "HB", she flipped cuts from Lenny Kravitz, Watch the Throne, Nicki Minaj, and Gotye upside down in a hyper-energetic mix. Unlike most of her DJ contemporaries, she's not stationary behind the decks. She ran to the edge of the stage, making a personal connection often missing from EDM. Then, she even climbed atop the HB, jumping and dancing. As a result, the audience soon took to its feet—especially when she asked, "Where the sexy Latinas at?"
Midway through the set, she grabbed her golden microphone and belted out "Big Banana" from her When The Lights Go Out EP alongside Prophet of 7Lions. Over a propulsive beat, she confidently tore through the sharply funny song about a, well, big banana. With a smile, she name-checked Die Hard and Bruce on the verse just before asking, "Do you have a big banana?" Her voice carried throughout the auditorium beautifully, and she kept the party going by reaching right into the seats.
Everything culminated on a rousing rendition of her massive international hit, "We Run The Night". The song sounded equally massive on stage with her flawless delivery and incomparable charm. The entire house sang along, and she left the stage victoriously.
Havana Brown was still undoubtedly "running" through everyone's head. From DJing to singing, she redefines what a 21st century star is, and she's on her way to ruling the whole damn game.
