Jessie and the Toy Boys add a little something to pop music that's been absent for quite some time—a sense of humor.
Of course, Jessie takes her music seriously.
During her performance in the outdoor village of The KIIS-FM Jingle Ball this past Saturday, her adroit attention to detail was immediately evident as she danced flawlessly in tune with her two "Toy Boys" and sang even more flawlessly.
At the same time, she threw in hilarious lines like "flip me over like a pancake" in the middle of the explosively catchy "Let's Get Naughty". It's that combination of pop precision and world-wise wit that makes Jessie and the Toy Boys the ultimate 21st century diva.
Jessie took the stage with the arena-ready firestarter "We Own the Night." In a shimmering black form-fitting one-piece, she resembled a superhero ready to save pop music from cliché. She carried the hook with a bouncy energy that immediately flowed into "Money Makes the Girl Go Round", sparking some serious movement from the audience. The "Cha-ching" sound in the middle of the song made for a nice touch. However, our new heroine really stood out on the transcendently sparse "Flashback". Alone with the mic, she told a tale of infidelity with a poetic cadence as slippery dubstep wobbles crashed under her voice. The tune's hook reached invigorating and intelligent heights as she flipped the script ever so slyly in the song' storyline.
"Push It" ignited a sing-a-long as Jessie elegantly entranced. When she asked the crowd, "Have you been naughty or nice this year?"
There was only one correct answer. She's going to make music at large "naughty", and that's why we're going to have such a blast [and laugh] when Jessie deservedly becomes the new queen of pop…
