We caught up with Lucinda Williams on the third night of her five-night stand, when she was playing her Grammy award-winning 1998 album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, in its entirety. The El Rey Theatre was packed to capacity with adoring fans, hanging on Williams' every note and anecdote. And she delivered, offering a little bit of background color before playing every song. Leading into "Lake Charles," she talked about hanging out with her friend Blaise (who was later shot in a "senseless fight"), and said you hadn't lived till you'd hung out by the lake drinking Dixie beer and eating boudin on a saltine cracker.

Williams was clearly having a grand old time in the limelight as old friends came and went on-stage throughout the show. Country-rock legend Steve Earle played with Williams throughout on guitar, lending vocals for "Concrete and Barbed Wire," while sweet-voiced Southern singer Allison Moorer stepped in with backing vocals on "Greenville." Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) joined the band for an impressive shredding session on the bluesy vamp number "Joy," which saw Williams crazy snarl in full force ("you took my joy / I want it back") when she wasn't head-banging along to the music. At the end she proclaimed, "That was fucking awesome!"

Awesome, indeed. Particularly on the slower, more melancholy numbers like "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten" and the Southern traditional-inspired album closer, "Jackson," the 54-year-old Williams proved that the cracked beauty of her drawl is still fully, breathtakingly, intact.
